Our Wallabies
Panorama guesthouse does not offer only a comfortable accommodation near the centre of Mikulov but also an absolutely unique possibility – to visit the kangaroo-range directly in its premises!
In June 2008 kangaroo Vojta moved in and found area with lots of grass to eat and a shelter for rainy nights. Vojta is a Bennett’s Wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus fruticus), a subspecies of the Red-necked Wallaby. These wallabies, thanks to their rich fur, endure also colder conditions and Vojta therefore can rule in his range all year long.
Not to limit Vojta’s social life only to the visits of our guests, we decided to get him a girl-friend. The name of the Bennett’s Wallaby female is Maruška and she lives with Vojta since April 2009. Of course we plan to increase the number of wallabies in the future.
The guests of the Panorama guesthouse can visit the wallabies anytime. Wallabies never hurt people and willingly come for a carrot or an apple.
Bennet’s Wallaby
The height of Bennet’s Wallaby is 66 to 93 cm, tail is 62 to 88 cm long. Its weight ranges between 11 to 27 kg. It lives 12 to 15 years.
Food
Bennett’s Wannaby is a herbivore animal, like all wallabies, eating only grass, herbs and leaves. Wallabies are adapted to relatively poor food and in dry periods they settle for herbs that other animals would despise. For this they have a specially segmented stomach, which, although short of perfection of ruminants, enables wallabies to digest food rich in cellulose. Wallabies also chew the digested food.
Occurrence
In two subspecies in South East Australia from southern Queensland to south-east South Australia and Tasmania. They prefer forests with dense undergrowth, for pasture, however, they need sparsely forested places. It is the most widespread kangaroo of eucalyptus forests. Logging rather benefited than hurt this kangaroo because more passages between forest and grass landscapes were created.
Way of Life
Bennett’s Wannaby spends days usually hidden in the woods or in the wilderness. It is most active at dusk and at night which is dedicated to pasture. Usually several wallabies graze together at the same time – often a family or at least relational groups that do not have any leaders and individual animals move according to their will, quite independently of the others. When a member of the group spots a possible enemy nearby, warns the other by stumping and beating its tail against the ground. The group runs away or tries to find a refuge in the water, if it is in the vicinity.
Points of Interest
Female of Bennett’s Wallaby has a calf in the pocket almost for the longest period of time of all the wallabies, up to 40 weeks. There are over 300,000 wallabies but recently the number starts to decline. Animals of Tasmanian populations that endure well even a relatively harsh winter were successfully relocated to other continents, even to northern and central Europe. In mainland populations, the young are born in all seasons and in Tasmanian population from February to March, i.e. at the top of the summer in southern hemisphere. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the kangaroo was bred also in the Czech Republic, near Poděbrady. Let’s add that the wallabies are doing very well in the south of Moravia.
